The idea was to query information systems and databases with natural language, rather than requesting new Power BI reports that would require effort to define and build time-consuming. It would be a dream to converse with the data like humans do. We made this possible.

Challenge

As a big corporation, our client had an extensive array of different reporting systems and databases. The development cycle was long and complex, with software licenses being expensive. A small change in an existing report could take several days to implement, while creating a new report request took weeks or even months. Business analysts were limited in their efficiency due to the repetitive nature of some tasks, as well as ad-hoc and individual requests that required specialized attention.

Solution

We created a chatbot interface to connect with our database, allowing users to ask queries like ‘What were my top 5 selling items last quarter in North America, excluding Ontario?’ and receive the data as an Excel table or optionally as a diagram. By training an AI agent at the layer between the chat interface and database, we facilitated all reporting tasks. The AI can autonomously understand user demands, select the right tables and filters, run queries, and return results.

Result

The deployment time for new reports has been drastically reduced to zero, resulting in significant increases in flexibility for end-users. This shift has enabled some organizations to relinquish their reporting software licenses. As a result, the reporting process has become faster, more flexible, and cost-efficient.
